Positive Patient ID Testimonials

The following testimonials illustrate the many ways that PDC-TimeMed wristband solutions help hospitals to increase patient safety, reduce medical errors, streamline operations, and reduce costs. They provide some of the reasons why more hospitals choose PDC products over all our competitors combined.

Does your hospital have a success story to tell that may help other facilities to better serve their patients? If so, we'd like to hear from you! 1. St. Thomas Health

Four hospitals throughout middle Tennessee

Program: PowerPlus™ Purchasing Program

Challenge:

Saint Thomas Health Services lacked a standardized purchasing program for labels. Multiple departments outsourced hundreds of labels from up to 20 vendors, paying different prices for the same labels.

Consultative Solution:

Through its PowerPlus auditing system, PDC-TimeMed documented label type, volume, and overall investment, while identifying products for standardization and stocking levels. An aggregate cost savings using PDC-TimeMed labels was furnished.

Results:

St. Thomas achieved a 22% cost savings, or $73,000, through a single source solution for the majority of its labels. Standardizing product usage through all departments saved additional time and resources.

2. Houston Medical Center

Warner Robin, Georgia

Product: ScanBand® Print-on-Demand BarCode Wristband System

Need:

Implement a cost effective, point-of-care bar code wristband system to reduce manual entry associated with handwritten wristbands and manual data entry in glucose testing. Reduce nurse and lab personnel time in identifying patients, charting, and billing.

Results:

30% decrease in patient identification errors in first 3 months of implementation. At least 2 minutes per patient are saved per nurse. With an average of 200 patients triaged in the ED per day, over 6.5 hours are saved in identifying patients for glucose testing. Hospital staff can now spend significantly more time treating patients.
Response: “Nursing and lab personnel no longer have to manually key in the patient’s account number. This allows them more time for patient care. The bar coding also gives our information systems accurate data automatically for charting in the patient's medical record and to appropriately bill the patient’s account. The system has cost less than $10,000, and I believe that is a very positive ROI for a relatively minimal investment.”     -Beth Benefield, Executive Director of Information Technology and Imaging Services

3. Alabama Regional Medical Center

Anniston, Alabama

Product: Securline® Blood Band Wristbands

Need:

A more cost effective wristband with more enhanced features than current product (Typenex® of Typenex Medical, L.L.C.).

Results:

21% more cost savings vs. Typenex and improved features, including patented SecurSnap® plastic closure that staff prefers over Typenex’s metal snaps.

Response:

“A major reason we changed products was because of the cost-savings we incurred with Blood Band…Our work is based on having the correct blood sample for the right patient. We can’t afford not to use a reliable blood band—the integrity of our work and the safety of our patients depend on it. The [Blood Band] serialization is essential for providing positive patient identification.”
Linda Harvey, Blood Bank Supervisor

4. Daughters of Charity Health System

6 regional hospitals from the Bay Area to Los Angeles

Product: ScanBand® Print-on-Demand Bar Code Wristband System

Need:

Reliable bar code wristband system to provide quality, legibility, and water-resistance to ensure accurate bar code scanning. Strong resistance to showers and fluids. Non-transferability to prevent lost or transferred patient data.

Results:

Positive bar code identification helps eliminate any occurrences of a wrong medical record in glucose testing, providing 100% testing of the right patient. Print-on-demand thermal printing design resists water, provides durability, and speed, saving nurse’s time. Tamper-evident feature prevents wristband transfer.

Response:

Our bar code system implementation has been extremely good. Nurses like the simplicity of ScanBand and training is very simple. Clearly, patients can see we are using this technology to more positively ID them. It’s been a successful patient safety initiative.”      -Michael Day, Director of Clinical Systems

5. Jacobi Medical Center

Bronx, New York

Product: Smart Band® RFID Wristband System (PILOT)

Need:

An automated patient identification system that improves patient safety and care, increases productivity, and helps cut costs over the current paper-based system.

Results:

"The RFID trial saved one hour per nurse per shift. If the application is rolled out networkwide, it could potentially save $1 million a year, but more mportantly this creates two to three hours during every nursing shift for additional patient contact and care.”  Daniel Morreale, Chief Information Officer for NBHN

Response:

Clinicians have endorsed the pilot program and want it expanded because it makes the handling of administrative tasks simpler… After the two month trial, we went in to retrieve the equipment and the staff refused to give it back. The system’s ROI is evident in cost savings, but more importantly, in improved patient safety.” -Systems Integrator Jerry Moy, Senior Client Executive, Siemens Business Services

6. Anderson Hospital

Maryville, Illinois

Product: Sentry® Bar Code Label Band Wristband System

Need:

Identify a new bar code wristband system that is more efficient, cost effective, and comfortable for patients than the existing sheeted product, which staff finds cumbersome. Provide higher quality and more accurate bar code scanning. Eliminate waste of unused paper from the sheet. Also, provide stronger durability and security to prevent removal of wristbands from patients.

Results:

A savings of $15,000 per year, or 56% less cost than previous sheeted bar code wristband system used. Best bar code scanning than any other product tested. Secure plastic snap closure prevents removal of band as opposed to previous adhesive closures. Nursing staff also found that band is easier to apply and patients found it smoother on the skin.

Response:

"We tested various wristbands and LabelBand performed the best during bar code scanning, and we've had no problems…Among many things, it’s a huge time saver. I didn’t have to do anything to make the wristband work for me—it just works and looks good. It's a true hospital wristband that should be used in all hospitals looking to cut costs and improve patient safety.
Pamela Barker, Director of Admissions

7. LaPorte Hospital and Health Services

La Porte, Indiana

Product: Color Coded Sentry SuperBand® Alert Wristbands

Need:

A high quality color-coded wristband system for pediatric resuscitation. Compatible with the Broselow® Pediatric Emergency Tape measure to quickly identify proper medication administration and equipment usage based on the weight and size of the child.

Results:

At admission, every pediatric patient is weighed and assigned a color category from the system. The weight is charted and an information sheet and a master calculation sheet with medication dosages are placed in the patient's chart. The corresponding wristband is applied to the patient and changed accordingly with his/her weight changes. Sentry Wristbands provide a quick reference for accurate medication administration and proper equipment usage.

Response:

"If a patient was to go into respiratory or cardiac arrest, the colored wristband would quickly identify the appropriate treatment pouch needed and we would be ready to treat the patient without wasting time. The enhanced resuscitation system gives patients the best possible chance of recovery."
Pat Larson, Chairperson for the Blue Code Committee

8. United States Navy

Pensacola Fleet Hospital, Iraq

Product: Smart Band® RFID Wristband System

Need:

Automated patient identification system to immediately identify and track the status and location of wounded soldiers, prisoners of war, refugees, and other arriving for treatment. System would replace the manual system of pen and paper, cardboard tags, and whiteboard to identify and track patient movement.

Results:

Medical professionals scan patient Smart Bands with an RFID Reader to read the unique identification number and add or change data to create a digital treatment record that travels with the patient throughout the facility. Using a wireless LAN, patient information is transferred to an electronic patient management system, further eliminating manual re-entering of data.

Response:

“The ability to keep important information with each patient, and to track his or her whereabouts automatically have  helped medical professionals at this facility to better manage patient care.”
HMC Michael Stiney

9. Stanford Hospital & Clinics

Stanford University Medical Center

Product: CompuBand® Bar Code Wristband System

Need:

An automated bar code wristband solution to eliminate transposition errors at laboratory glucose meters, which results in patient misidentification errors, causing staff to spend several hours per week correcting.

Results:

CompuBand provides an automated link between the medical device and information system. Upon scanning CompuBand, data is automatically downloaded to the clinical laboratory, where it is joined to other test results in the patient’s medical record. Based on its success, CompuBand is also used in nine other departments, including Nursing, Admitting, Medical Records, Emergency Department, and Cath/Angio.  The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, an adjacent facility, is now also using the system.

Response:

"It was a pretty exciting project, one that nurses saw benefit from and embraced. It made their jobs easier because it’s a lot less work to scan a bar code than to enter information manually. This change has been perceived to be very positive.”
Connie Taylor, Patient Care Policy and Procedures Coordinator

10. Northridge Hospital Medical Center

Northridge, California

Need:

An improved solution to the Labor & Delivery Department’s current insert-style wristband to re-adjust to the changing of the changing size of the baby’s wrist. Also prevent patient information from smudging or smearing during bathing, and tamperproof design for maximum security.
